Home Sweet Home Alone ★★

Dan Mazer

Starring Archie Yates, Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney, Aisling Bea, Pete Holmes, Kenan Thompson

Here we go again!

Released in November to kickstart the festive season, this Disney+ original, directed by Dan Mazer, is a sequel to the cult classic Home Alone, this time starring Archie Yates, Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney and Aisling Bea.

The new edition does run a fairly identical narrative structure, pattern and pace to the original, which from the offset leads to unwanted comparisons.

In its own light, Home Sweet Home Alone does add a fresh outlook on the story, with the perfect match of comedic tones for both adults and children. The "villains" themselves have a less intense motive than the 1990 thieves, which almost makes the film feel more uplifting and family friendly.

Aside from narrative similarities, there were countless additions to the script that oded to the original, including the iconic Kevin face slap, a moment of "Home Alone" realisation and a cameo from one of the original cast members to name just a few.

Did it need to happen? No. There was nothing new in the story that would make this go to a Christmas classic. Is it still a good bit of festive fun? Absolutely!
