Tom Cruise continues his era as the King of movie blockbusters with the next entry in his golden franchise Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One not only delivering on the stunts, but could also very well be the best in the series so far.
When a self aware AI begins to invade technology across the globe, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and the rest of the IMF must work together to get hold of the literal key to unlocking its secrets, all the while being hunted by a ghost from Hunt’s past who wants the AI to bring the world to its knees.
The series shows off an exuberant confidence that knows exactly what to do to outdo the previous entry. Mission: Impossible - Fallout boasted a couple of impressively huge stunts, but Dead Reckoning doesn’t cower down with its incredible set pieces, thanks to the daring insanity of lead actor Tom Cruise and his camera wielding enabler, director Christopher McQuarrie.
This man will get himself killed trying to outdo each stunt and we will continue to watch, applauding the dedication to both entertainment and cinema as a whole.
The supporting cast lock in together to form a stronger sense of family than Fast and Furious can dream of (ironically the car chases are better too), with newcomer Hayley Atwell providing an engaging audience perspective into what it takes to become an IMF agent.
If I had any complaints, it would be that as this is a Part 1. The plot is so far incomplete and we have no way of knowing If Dead Reckoning is going to stick the landing. But the ride is so far emphatically enjoyable and the track record of Cruise and McQuarrie is as trusting as we are going to get with anticipation of an equally compelling movie.
Dead Reckoning Part 1 cements Ethan Hunt and the IMF as the current pinnacle of spy movie protagonists, dethroning James Bond and keeping the genre itself alive and interesting. Hats off to the entire production team who made this possible and I’ll be seeing you next summer once I’ve healed from my wounds attempting to ride a bike off a quarry.
