See How They Run ★★★★

Tom George

Starring Sam Rockwell, Saoirse Ronan, Adrien Brody, Ruth Wilson, Reece Shearsmith

We are firmly in the middle of the murder mystery renaissance period. With Ryan Johnson's Knives Out making the genre popular again after a failed attempt from Kenneth Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express, we are now presented with successes Only Murders in the Building and now See How They Run.

First time director Tom George assembles a cast as glamorous as they are hilarious, with Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan leading the investigation as Inspector Stoppard and Constable Stalker respectively.

Accompanied by the likes of Adrien Brody, Ruth Wilson and Reece Shearsmith, it's a stellar cast that you need for an exciting whodunnit. This is a meta whodunnit about a whodunnit: The Mousetrap, the longest running play in the world that still runs in the West End today.

Rockwell delivers a strong British accent as down-in-the-dumps, alcoholic Stoppard, and that paralleled with Saoirse Ronan's unmatched energy is far away from a crime.

Every single frame of this is so much fun, with gags within flashbacks and in prop cupboards to make audiences laugh out loud, and moments of chaos, regret and heartbreak tugging at some more emotional beats.

It's an incredibly difficult task to leave an audience satisfied with the outcome of a murder mystery, and although this waivers for a moment, it gets back on track to sustain its comedy values and dramatic reveals for an epic conclusion (but as we're told in The Mousetrap: "keep the secret of whodunnit locked in your heart").

An absolute triumph, See How They Run twists and turns its way through hilarious dialogue and refreshingly fun plot pieces. You'll have a great time!
