The Adam Project ★★★★

Shawn Levy

Starring Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldana, Jennifer Garner

Streamers have gone from strength to strength in recent years, with some fo the world's biggest directors turning to different platforms to release their films. But sometimes those sites can feel overpopulated with content and can be therefore overwhelming, with algorithms pushing certain projects to the home page, tempting you to give them a watch. The Adam Project is one of those times that I'm happy to give in to the algorithm, and watch what is suggested.

Starring his new favourite toy Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy alters the setting to create another combination that makes for great family entertainment. As Adam (Reynolds) is accidentally reunited with his younger self, played effortlessly by Walker Scobell, a timey wimey mission lays ahead. And most of the review lies with the chemistry of those two leading Adam's...

It would be easy for this time travel sci-fi/fantasy to feel familiar and easy, but the energy between the two leads is unbelievable. Scobell somehow replicated Reynolds' sarcastic quips to perfection and the emotional beats come just as thick and fast as the comedic ones. The supporting cast are strong too but somewhat underused, with a 13 Going on 30 reunion all too short but sweet. It doesn't matter though, for you only want to spend time with the leading pair.

When it does feel redundant is when it lies too heavily on the futuristic jargon, the quality is in the characters, and the film occasionally forgets that.

With a strong soundtrack, decent gags and a quality script to boot, The Adam Project is a superior Shawn Levy film, a superior Ryan Reynolds film, and one of the better Netflix releases. I loved it..."more than I know"!
